Giant Homespun Candy Canes

Forget Thanksgiving crafts, HELLOOOOO Christmas!!! Here it is, my first official Christmas craft tutorial. I actually made these weeks ago but was saving them for after all the Halloween shenanigans. I got this idea perusing around online and just LOVE these huge homespun candy canes. I picked up some cheap, cheesy, plastic candy canes at the Amvet, 5 for $1. They were a very ugly blue and white, UNTIL…

I ADDED HOMESPUN! Homespun is the answer to all of life’s problems!

I started with long strips of muslin (which now I wish I had tea-stained first, but oh well…) about 2 or 3 inches wide and wrapped it completely, overlapping quite a bit. I had to overlap a lot to cover up that intense blue color which kept showing through. I then cut long, approximately 2” wide, strips of red/maroon colored homespun fabric and hot-glued it to the inside of the bottom of the cane (they are hollow plastic) and wrapped it while making sure the stripes were evenly spaced.

They were a little too plain as is, so I added some berries and rusty bells, both of which I found at the Hobby Lobby for super cheap. Yay for clearance racks!

BEFORE and AFTER….

I thought they came out really cute and hopefully people at the craft show will think so too! Once Christmas is over, you bet I am gonna be scooping these things up on the after-season sale rack for next year’s show!

If you decide to make them or experiment with this idea, be sure to send a pic my way…I’d love to see!!! :)
